Mineral oil-free printing inks

For the past several months, Hammer GmbH has implemented the exclusive use of mineral oil-free offset printing inks. The motive for these measures was the current discussion regarding foodstuffs contaminated by mineral oils.

The Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) has taken up this issue and invited the affected industrial associations to a discussion on 24 February 2010.

EU-Regulation 450/2009 for active and intelligent packaging with contact with foodstuffs

After its enactment on 11 February 2009 by the EU Standing Committee and its publication in the Official Journal of the EU(L135) on 30 May 2009, the new “Regulation (EC) No. 450/2009 of the EU Commission from 29 May 2009 regarding active and intelligent materials and objects which are intended to come into contact with food” came into force on 19 June 2009.

The use of UV inks and finishes on primary food packaging (made from cardboard)

In its most current document (“1_ECMA Position UV inks 07 04 2009 FV”), our European umbrella association ECMA reiterates its recommendations of foregoing use of UV inks and varnishes for primary food packaging (made from cardboard), or switching to the use of alternative materials – even when these are more cost-intensive – which have been evaluated by an independent third party.

Several paragraphs of the German Food and Feed Code have been changed. The revised version § 60 Par. 3 No. 1 d) LFGB should be taken note of.

Customer information from EuPIA [the European Printing Ink Association]

Regulation (EG) No. 1935/20041 dictates that consumer goods which are designated finished goods and which come into contact with foodstuffs or which come into use with foodstuffs as part of their intended use.
